Born on January 7, 1898, in London, England, Gertrude Lawrence began her career in music hall and vaudeville before making her West End debut in 1921. Her success on the London stage led to a successful career on Broadway, where she starred in numerous productions, including "The King and I" (1951), for which she received a Tony Award nomination. Despite her many accolades and achievements, Lawrence's personal life was marked by tragedy and heartache. She was married four times and was known for her tumultuous relationships. However, she remained dedicated to her craft, continuing to perform until her retirement in 1955 due to ill health.
