EDITORS COMMENTS
Flying Officer Lloyd Allan Trigg: A Hero of the New Zealand Air Force and the First Victoria Cross Recipient in the Battle Against U-boats This evocative photograph captures the determined and resolute gaze of Flying Officer Lloyd Allan Trigg (1914-1943), a brave and decorated airman of the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF). The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1943, immortalizes Trigg's heroic actions during World War II, making him the first airman to be awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross (VC) for his role in the battle against German U-boats. Trigg's extraordinary feat unfolded during a daring mission in the North Atlantic, where he and his crew aboard their Liberator bomber, 'B for Baker,' were tasked with hunting down enemy submarines. On the fateful day of May 13, 1943, Trigg spotted a U-boat on the surface and maneuvered his plane to attack, despite knowing the inherent risks involved. With unwavering courage, Trigg flew his Liberator at extremely low altitude, strafing the U-boat with machine gun fire. The relentless assault forced the submarine to surface, revealing its position to the Allied forces. However, Trigg's plane sustained significant damage during the attack, and he knew his aircraft was not long for this world. In an instant, Trigg made the decision to crash-land his Liberator into the sea, sacrificing himself and his crew to prevent the U-boat from escaping. The enemy submarine was eventually destroyed, but the heroic actions of Flying Officer Trigg and his crew went largely unnoticed, had it not been for a German officer who spoke of Trigg's great courage in the face of certain death. This poignant photograph serves as a testament to Trigg's bravery and the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of the Royal New Zealand Air Force during World War II. The image encapsulates the spirit of heroism, determination, and resilience that defined the Allied forces in their fight against the Axis powers.
