EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the chaos and desperation of the July 1866 Flight in Tyrol, an event that marked a pivotal moment in the Risorgimento, or Italian Unification. The inhabitants of the Austrian-held Italian Tyrol, located in the Alps, are seen here in a frantic rush to escape the advancing Italian army. Dressed in their finest clothes and carrying their most precious possessions, they make their way across a bridge, leaving behind their homes and livelihoods. The First Italian War of Independence, which began in 1859, had seen several territorial gains for the Italian states. However, the defeat of Austria at the Battle of Custoza in July 1866 shifted the balance of power in the region. The Treaty of Vienna, signed later that year, forced Austria to cede several territories to Prussia and Italy. The Italian army, led by General Alfonso La Marmora, marched into Tyrol, determined to claim the region for the newly unified Italian state. The Flight in Tyrol, also known as the Exodus of the Tyroleans, was a mass exodus of people from the region. An estimated 60,000 to 80,000 people fled, seeking refuge in Austria and other neighboring countries. The event left a deep scar on the region and is remembered as a tragic chapter in the history of the Tyrol. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, offers a glimpse into the past, capturing the sense of urgency and fear that gripped the people of Tyrol during this tumultuous time. It serves as a reminder of the human cost of political upheaval and the enduring power of the human spirit to persevere in the face of adversity.
