EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Emanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy (1528-1580), also known as Tete de fer or 'Iron-Head,' in his regal splendor. Born in Turin, Italy, Emanuel Philibert was the eldest son of Duke Charles III of Savoy and Catherine of Austria. He succeeded his father in 1553 and ruled over the Savoyard territories, which included parts of modern-day Italy, France, and Switzerland. Emanuel Philibert was a skilled diplomat and military leader who played a significant role in European politics during the second half of the 16th century. He allied himself with various European powers, including Spain, France, and the Holy Roman Empire, to further the interests of Savoy. In 1563, he married Marguerite of France, a daughter of King Henry II of France, which strengthened his ties with the French court. Despite his diplomatic skills, Emanuel Philibert was also known for his military prowess. He led several successful campaigns against the French, including the capture of the important fortress of Montmélian in 1574. His nickname, 'Iron-Head,' was a testament to his reputation as a fierce and determined leader. This portrait, dating from around 1570, shows Emanuel Philibert in his prime. He is depicted wearing the rich robes of a duke, adorned with the Order of the Golden Fleece, and holding a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other. The portrait's intricate details, including the Duke's piercing gaze and the fine textures of his clothing, demonstrate the skill of the artist and the high quality of the print. Emanuel Philibert's reign was marked by political intrigue, military conquests, and diplomatic maneuvers. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a powerful European ruler of the late Renaissance period, whose legacy continues to shape the history of the Savoyard region and beyond.
