EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Eleanor of Aquitaine, the remarkable queen consort of King Henry II of England, in the year 1204. Eleanor, born in 1122 in what is now France, was a powerful and influential figure in European history, renowned for her beauty, intelligence, and political acumen. At the age of 15, Eleanor was married to King Louis VII of France, but their union was annulled just six years later. In 1137, she was married to the future King Henry II of England, marking the beginning of a tumultuous and complex relationship. Eleanor's second marriage was marked by political alliances and strategic maneuvering, as she brought her vast lands in Aquitaine to the English crown. Despite her marriage to Henry II, Eleanor's heart often belonged to her first love, the Duke of Aquitaine, with whom she had several children before her marriage to Henry. Her infidelity and rebellion against her husband led to several periods of imprisonment, but Eleanor continued to wield significant power behind the scenes. This print, created by an unknown artist, captures the regal and enigmatic presence of Eleanor of Aquitaine. She is depicted in her later years, with a serious expression and an air of authority. The intricate detail of her headdress and the rich fabric of her gown highlight her status as a queen and a powerful ruler in her own right. Eleanor's legacy extends beyond her tumultuous marriage to Henry II. She was a patron of the arts, a supporter of the Crusades, and a key figure in the transmission of Occitan poetry and troubadour culture from the south of France to the rest of Europe. This print serves as a reminder of her enduring impact on European history and her status as one of the most fascinating and complex figures of the Middle Ages.
