Mrs. Keppel and King Edward VII: An Unconventional Friendship This evocative photograph captures a moment in time between King Edward VII of England and his close friend, Alice Keppel, Countess of Albemarle, in 1906. Edward, who reigned from 1901 until his death in 1910, was known for his love of pleasure and his many friendships with women. Alice Keppel, the beautiful and charismatic daughter of the 7th Earl of Albemarle, was one of his most enduring companions. Their friendship began in the late 1880s when Alice was just a young woman. Edward, who was then the Prince of Wales, was immediately taken with her wit and charm. Over the years, their friendship deepened, and they were often seen together at social events and on holidays. Alice's influence over Edward was a subject of much gossip and scandal, as she was married to a man who was often away from home. Despite the controversy, Alice remained a constant presence in Edward's life. In this photograph, taken in 1906, they are seen enjoying each other's company in a relaxed and informal setting. Alice, dressed in a stylish hat and coat, looks directly at the camera with a confident and playful expression. Edward, dressed in a morning coat and striped trousers, gazes at her with a fond and affectionate expression. Their friendship continued until Edward's death in 1910. Alice, who was known as "the Queen of the Harem," was a controversial figure in her own right, but her relationship with Edward remains an intriguing chapter in the history of the British monarchy.
