EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Thomas Howard, the third Duke of Norfolk (1473-1554), an influential figure in Tudor England. Born into the powerful Howard family, Norfolk rose to prominence under King Henry VIII, serving variously as Lord Chamberlain, Lord Privy Seal, Lord Treasurer, and Lord High Admiral. His political acumen and loyalty earned him numerous titles and the trust of the monarch. The Duke's attire in this image reflects his high rank. He wears a richly embroidered doublet and hose, adorned with intricate gold and silver thread, and a velvet cap with ermine trim. The ducal coronet, featuring the Howard family badge of three golden lions passant guardant, sits atop his head. The background, with its ornate frame and gilded edges, further emphasizes Norfolk's wealth and status. Despite his close relationship with Henry VIII, Norfolk's loyalty was tested during the king's sixth marriage to Catherine Parr. When the king became suspicious of Catherine's fidelity, Norfolk, who was married to Catherine's stepdaughter, was implicated in a plot to protect her. He was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London, but was eventually released and pardoned. Norfolk's political career continued until his death in 1554. He is buried in the Collegiate Church of St. George, Westminster, alongside his predecessors and successors as Duke of Norfolk. This portrait, a testament to his power and influence during the Tudor era, remains an intriguing glimpse into the life of this complex and influential figure.
