EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Cornish Gorsedd, a vibrant community of modern-day bards, come together in the historic town of St Just in Cornwall for the enchanting Sword of Arthur ceremony. Established in 1928, the Gorseth Kernow (Gorsedd of Cornwall) was formed with the purpose of preserving and celebrating the rich Celtic heritage and spirit of Cornwall. As the sun sets over the picturesque landscape, the bards, clad in traditional robes of blue and purple, gather around the ancient stone circle. The air is thick with anticipation as they prepare to take part in this age-old tradition. Towards the end of the ceremony, each bard swears an oath of loyalty to their Motherland, Cornwall, by touching the hilt of the Sword of King Arthur. The sword, a symbol of Cornish history and tradition, is passed from bard to bard as they place one hand on the shoulder of the bard in front, creating a powerful bond between them. The scene is further enhanced by the presence of a harpist, adding an ethereal melody to the atmosphere. The bards' artistic and creative expressions, rooted in literature, music, and the arts, serve as a testament to the enduring cultural customs and traditions of the Celtic people. This photograph captures a moment in time, transporting us back to the 1980s, a decade steeped in history and tradition, and reminding us of the importance of preserving our heritage for future generations.
