EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the intensity and chaos of the Naval Battle of the Tagus during the Portuguese Civil War in 1831. At the heart of the image is Dom Pedro I of Brazil, who had returned to Portugal to claim the throne after his father's abdication in 1826. However, his claim was contested by his uncle, Dom Miguel, who had seized power in a coup d'état. The battle took place on August 27, 1831, and saw Dom Pedro's forces, including a British fleet, facing off against Dom Miguel's Portuguese navy and militia. The Tagus River, Portugal's longest and most important waterway, served as the battleground for this pivotal moment in Portuguese history. In the print, Dom Pedro is depicted standing on the deck of a ship, his expression determined and resolute as he surveys the scene before him. Around him, the sails of the ships are filled with wind, and the water churns with the impact of cannonballs and the oars of rowboats. Smoke rises from the ships and the water, obscuring the horizon and adding to the sense of confusion and danger. The outcome of the battle was a decisive victory for Dom Pedro, who was able to secure his claim to the throne and establish a constitutional monarchy. The event marked the end of the Miguelist Wars and ushered in a new era of political stability for Portugal. This print is a powerful reminder of the courage and determination of the individuals involved in this crucial moment in Portuguese history.
