EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a pivotal moment in the life of Christopher Columbus, the renowned explorer, during Card Series 9. Born in 1446 in Genoa, Italy, Columbus embarked on a journey to discover a western sea route to Asia for Spain in 1492. However, his success brought about the envy and jealousy of other colonists, who saw him as a threat to their power and wealth. In the year 1506, Columbus was taken back to Spain by Bartolomé de las Casas, acting on behalf of Governor Bobadilla. Columbus was falsely accused of tyranny and cruelty towards the native people. The scene depicted in this print shows Columbus being led away in chains, a stark contrast to his previous triumphs and discoveries. Despite the injustice, Columbus' legacy would endure. His voyages led to the opening of a new world, paving the way for centuries of exploration and colonization. This print serves as a reminder of the complexities of history, where even the greatest of explorers were not immune to the jealousies and intrigues of their contemporaries. This evocative image is part of the Card Series, a collection of engravings that chronicles significant events in history. The print, dated between 1446 and 1506, is a testament to the enduring power of historical narratives and the human capacity for both great achievements and tragic downfalls.
