EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration is a rare and early depiction of the Canis lupus dingo, also known as the Australian dingo or the native dog of New South Wales. Dating back to around 1790, this exquisite drawing is part of the Banks Manuscript 34, created by the Port Jackson Painter, an anonymous artist of the First Fleet of Australia. The dingo, a wild canid native to Australia, is believed to have arrived on the continent around 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. This illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the appearance of this ancient canine species as it was known to the early European settlers. Canis lupus dingo is a subspecies of the gray wolf, Canis lupus, and is closely related to the domestic dog, Canis lupus familiaris. However, unlike their domesticated counterparts, dingos are feral animals, living in the wild and hunting for their food. The dingo is an essential part of the Australian ecosystem, playing a crucial role in controlling populations of small mammals and reptiles. This drawing provides a precious record of the dingo's physical characteristics, including its slender build, pointed ears, and bushy tail. The Banks Manuscript 34 is an invaluable collection of natural history illustrations created during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This drawing, in particular, is a testament to the rich biodiversity of Australia and the keen observational skills of the early naturalists who documented it. Today, the dingo remains an iconic symbol of the Australian wilderness, and this beautiful illustration serves as a reminder of the important role that wild animals play in shaping the natural world around us.
