EDITORS COMMENTS
Calais Recaptured: The Duc de Guise Re-captures Calais from the English (1558) - A Momentous Event in Tudor History This evocative image captures the pivotal moment in 1558 when the Duc de Guise, leading the French forces, successfully re-captured the strategic port town of Calais from the English. The event marked the end of the Anglo-French War (1557-1559) and signified a significant victory for the French under the reign of Queen Mary I of England, also known as Bloody Mary due to her persecution of Protestants. Mary Tudor, born in 1516, ascended the English throne in 1553 following the death of her half-brother, Edward VI. Her marriage to Philip II of Spain and her determined efforts to restore Catholicism in England led to widespread opposition and conflict. In response, King Henry II of France, with the support of his son, the Duc de Guise, saw an opportunity to reclaim Calais, a long-standing bone of contention between the two nations. The battle for Calais was fierce, with both sides suffering heavy losses. However, the French forces, led by the Duc de Guise, ultimately emerged victorious. The town's capture marked a turning point in the war, and the English were forced to withdraw their troops. Mary Tudor's name is inextricably linked to Calais, as it was during her reign that the town was lost to the French for the final time. The event is said to have deeply affected her, and it is believed that she went to her grave with the name of the town written on her heart. This powerful image, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, provides a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Tudor history and the complex web of political alliances and conflicts that shaped Europe during the 16th century.
