EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the British Army Airship Beta, a historic aviation craft that served a crucial role during the First World War. The Beta, a non-rigid airship or blimp, was stationed in northern France and was equipped with a powerful 45-50 Clerget engine, capable of reaching a speed of 35 mph. With an impressive altitude of 4000 feet, this airship was a formidable addition to the British military arsenal. The Beta was primarily used for air reconnaissance over enemy lines, providing valuable intelligence to the British forces. Additionally, she played a vital role in escorting ships across the treacherous English Channel, ensuring their safe passage. After her service in the battlefields of France, the Beta returned to the UK for training purposes. She became the training ground for all early airship pilots, both naval and military, marking the beginning of their aviation careers. This photograph, taken in the early 1910s, captures the Beta and her hangar at an undisclosed location. The hangar, a testament to the innovation and progress of the time, stands tall against the backdrop of the open sky. The Beta, with its distinctive shape and elegant design, exemplifies the spirit of adventure and exploration that characterized the early days of aviation. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the history of military aviation during the First World War. The Beta, along with her crew of three, represents the courage and determination of the pioneers who pushed the boundaries of human flight. This image, from the archives of Mary Evans Prints Online, is a reminder of the rich history of military airships and their significant contribution to the RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service) and HMA (Her Majesty's Army) squadrons.
