This image transport us back to ancient Rome, showcasing a magnificent bireme warship, attributed to the legendary Roman commander Marcus Atilius Regulus Decimus Duillius. The bireme, a type of Roman galley with two banks of oars, was a formidable weapon in the Roman navy, known for its speed and maneuverability. But what sets this particular bireme apart is the addition of the innovative and fearsome Corvus, or "raven," grappling device. The Corvus was a unique Roman invention, designed to enable the Roman ships to board and capture enemy vessels during naval battles. The device consisted of a long, hooked pole with a spike at its end, which could be lowered onto the enemy ship's deck and secured with ropes. Once attached, Roman soldiers could climb up the ropes and engage in hand-to-hand combat, turning the tide of the battle. Duillius, a skilled naval commander, is said to have used this very bireme, fitted with the Corvus, to secure a decisive victory against the Carthaginians in the First Punic War in 259 BC. The image captures the power and determination of the Roman navy, as the bireme cuts through the waves, ready to engage in battle.
