The Bing Boys Are Here
EDITORS COMMENTS
was a popular musical comedy revue that premiered at London's Alhambra Theatre on April 19, 1916. This photograph captures two of the show's leading actors, Alfred Lester as Oliver (left) and George Robey as his brother Lucifer, in one of the seven panels that made up the production's depiction of London life. Although billed as an original work, "The Bing Boys Are Here" was actually an adaptation from a French production. The music was composed by Nat D. Ayer, with George Grossmith Junior and Fred Thompson credited as the writers. The image is taken from The Play Pictorial, Volume XXVIII, Number 169, page 54, and provides a glimpse into the lively and entertaining world of the Bing Boys. Oliver and Lucifer are shown in character, with Oliver looking concerned while Lucifer appears mischievous and devilish, as was his role in the production. The success of "The Bing Boys Are Here" can be attributed to its clever blend of music, comedy, and satire, as well as the charisma of its leading actors. The show ran for over 300 performances and was later adapted for the silent film screen. This photograph serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of live theatre and the talent of the performers who brought "The Bing Boys Are Here" to life on the Alhambra stage over a century ago.
