EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print commemorates the Battle of Palo Alto, which took place on May 8, 1846, in what is now Texas. The engagement was the first major military confrontation between the United States and Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The American forces, led by General Zachary Taylor with a total strength of around 2,900 men, faced off against a Mexican army of approximately 6,000 soldiers, commanded by General Adrián Woll, commonly referred to as General Arista in some accounts. The battlefield was situated near the small village of Palo Alto, and the engagement began early in the morning. The Mexicans initially held the upper hand, driving the Americans back with heavy artillery fire. However, the tide of the battle turned when Taylor ordered a counterattack, which successfully pushed the Mexicans back and secured the American position. The victory came at a cost, with the American forces suffering around 120 casualties, while Mexican losses were estimated to be significantly higher. This print captures the intensity and chaos of the battlefield, with soldiers from both sides locked in fierce combat. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the significant military engagement that marked the beginning of the Mexican-American War and the eventual expansion of the United States' territorial holdings.
