EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the aftermath of an assassination attempt on Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany, which took place on August 11, 1861, in the spa town of Baden-Baden. The image shows a chaotic scene as bystanders and soldiers rush to the aid of the Emperor, who is lying on the ground, surrounded by a sea of upturned chairs and fallen debris. At the center of the chaos stands Oskar Herwig Heilmann Becker, a young man in a dark coat and hat, who had attempted to assassinate the Kaiser with a revolver. Becker, a German nationalist and member of the radical Fraternity of the Fatherland, had been motivated by his belief that Wilhelm was not doing enough to protect the rights of the German people. The assassination attempt took place during a public appearance by the Kaiser, who was in Baden-Baden to take the waters for his health. As Wilhelm was being greeted by the crowd, Becker approached him and fired two shots, one of which struck the Emperor in the arm. The Kaiser was quickly ushered away to safety, and Becker was apprehended and later tried and executed. This photograph, taken shortly after the event, provides a vivid and dramatic record of the attempted assassination and the immediate aftermath. It is a reminder of the political tensions and instability that marked the latter decades of the 19th century in Germany, and the risks that even the most powerful leaders faced from radical elements within their own society.
