EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Anton Cermak, the charismatic and controversial mayor of Chicago, Illinois, in the 1930s. Born on February 14, 1873, in Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, Cermak immigrated to the United States as a young man and worked his way up from a laborer to become a powerful political figure. He served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives and the Cook County Board of Commissioners before being elected mayor in 1931. Cermak's tenure as mayor was marked by his efforts to improve the city's infrastructure and provide relief to the millions of unemployed during the Great Depression. He was also known for his close ties to organized crime, particularly to Al Capone, who reportedly provided financial support for Cermak's mayoral campaign. This association would later come back to haunt Cermak when he was assassinated by Giuseppe Zangara on February 15, 1933, while greeting crowds at the Columbus Day Parade. Despite the controversy surrounding his political career, Cermak remains an intriguing figure in Chicago's history. In this photograph, he is seen confidently addressing a crowd, his strong jawline and piercing gaze conveying a sense of determination and charisma. The photograph captures a moment in time when the complexities of urban politics and the challenges of the Great Depression intersected, and Cermak, with his larger-than-life personality, was at the center of it all.
