EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a historical gathering of four prominent figures from the Spanish Golden Age: Alberto Churriguera (1676-1740), Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón (1500-1577), Juan de Alava (d. 1537), and Gil de Hontañón (1500-1577). The image, created by an unknown artist, transports us back to the 16th and 17th centuries, providing a glimpse into the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Spain during this period. Alberto Churriguera, a renowned Baroque sculptor, is depicted standing on the left side of the print. Known for his intricate and ornate designs, Churriguera's masterpieces adorn numerous churches and palaces throughout Spain. His influence on Spanish art is evident in the detailed, almost theatrical, elements of this print. Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, an architect and painter, is shown seated in the center of the print. He is best known for his work on the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a grand architectural masterpiece commissioned by King Philip II of Spain. Gil de Hontañón's innovative designs and attention to detail are reflected in the ornate surroundings of this print. Juan de Alava, a military commander, is depicted on the right side of the print. He gained fame for his role in the conquest of Peru and the establishment of Lima as the capital city. Alava's military prowess and leadership skills were crucial in expanding Spain's influence in the New World. Gil de Hontañón, the second figure with the same name, is shown standing behind Churriguera. He was also an architect and painter, and worked closely with Churriguera on various projects. Together, these four figures represent the diverse talents and achievements of Spain during the Golden Age, a time marked by artistic, cultural, and territorial expansion.
