EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned artwork titled "Vocation Saint Aloysius Luigi Gonzaga" by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, also known as Guercino. Created around 1650, this oil painting measures an impressive 140 x 106 cm (3556 x 2692 cm). The subject of this masterpiece is none other than Saint Aloysius Luigi Gonzaga, a prominent figure in Italian history. Born in 1568 as the eldest son of the Marquis of Castiglione, he made a remarkable decision to resign his marquisate in favor of his younger brother. In 1585, he joined the Jesuit novitiate in Rome and dedicated himself to caring for the poor. Tragically, Saint Aloysius met an untimely demise at just twenty-three years old during a plague outbreak in 1591. Despite his short life, he left an indelible mark on society through his selfless devotion to others. Guercino's artistic prowess shines through in this piece as he captures the essence and spirit of Saint Aloysius with great skill and precision. The attention to detail and use of vibrant colors bring depth and emotion to the painting. This print from Liszt Collection allows art enthusiasts and admirers alike to appreciate one of Guercino's most notable works while honoring the legacy of Saint Aloysius Luigi Gonzaga—a true embodiment of compassion and sacrifice.
