EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Sibylla Erythrea Left Wing Triptych Donor Matelief Dammasz, a masterpiece created by Maarten van Heemskerck in 1564. The left side panel of this triptych features the enigmatic figure of Sybilla Erythraea, also known as the sibille of Erythrae. She is depicted sitting gracefully in a serene landscape, holding a book in her right hand. Behind her lies a breathtaking mountainous scenery with a city nestled beside a flowing river. On the inside of this panel, we find Matelief Dammasz, the kneeling founder who commissioned this artwork. He is accompanied by none other than St Paul himself, portrayed with great detail and reverence. On the table before them rests both Matelief's name and weapon - symbols of his identity and status. The integrated frame surrounding this piece adds to its grandeur and elegance. It serves as an exquisite border for these sacred figures and their story. The apostle Paul or Tarsus can be seen kneeling on both knees, possibly holding attributes such as books, scrolls, or swords. This print allows us to appreciate every brushstroke and color choice made by Van Heemskerck over four centuries ago. It captures not only the artistic brilliance but also the religious devotion that inspired such masterpieces during that time period.
