EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable silver sculpture project titled "Projet de sculpture en argent d'un grand surtout de table et les deux terrines qui ont été exécutées pour le millord duc de Kinston en 1735" (Project of a silver sculpture, a grand centerpiece for the table and two tureens that were executed for the Duke of Kinsington in 1735). The mastermind behind this exquisite work is none other than Juste Aurèle Meissonnier, an accomplished painter, sculptor, architect, and designer who served as the official artist for the royal chamber and cabinet. Created between 1742 and 1748, this etching captures the intricate details of Meissonnier's vision. Unfortunately, while one of the silver tureens was crafted based on his design and can now be found in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, the centerpiece project was ultimately abandoned. Nevertheless, this print allows us to appreciate Meissonnier's exceptional talent and craftsmanship. The caption/inscriptions on this print provide valuable information about its origin. In the upper right corner is marked "J. A. Meissonnier inv" indicating that it was designed by Juste Aurèle Meissonnier himself. On the lower left side is inscribed "Huquier Sculp" attributing Gabriel Huquier as responsible for creating this etching. This image not only offers a glimpse into an extraordinary artistic endeavor but also serves as a testament to Meissonnier's enduring legacy in French art history.
