Jubilee Line depot JLP01_11_61523_01

Stratford Market Depot, Stratford, Newham, Greater London. One of the new Jubilee Line underground tube trains (96003), standing on the tracks of one of the eleven maintenance bays inside the main shed at Stratford Market Depot.
Construction on the Stratford Market Depot was carried out by Laing London, with work starting on the 35 acre site in November 1993. The train depot, designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre, was built as part of the Jubilee Line Extension running from Green Park to Stratford and was where trains would be maintained and serviced. The shed which is a skewed parallelogram shaped structure, measuring 100m x 190m, had the space capacity to accommodate almost half the fleet, including 59 new six-car trains, with the first of the new trains arriving at the shed on 11th December 1996

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the impressive Jubilee Line depot at Stratford Market in Newham, Greater London. The image showcases one of the new underground tube trains, specifically train number 96003, standing proudly on the tracks inside one of the eleven maintenance bays within the main shed. Constructed by Laing London and designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre, this state-of-the-art train depot was an integral part of the Jubilee Line Extension project that connected Green Park to Stratford. Its purpose was to provide a space for maintaining and servicing these modern trains. The shed itself is a remarkable structure with its skewed parallelogram shape, measuring an impressive 100m x 190m. This vast space had enough capacity to accommodate nearly half of the fleet, including 59 brand-new six-car trains. It became operational when the first new train arrived on December 11th, 1996. The print offers a glimpse into this bustling hub of rail transport in the 1990s. It highlights not only the scale and efficiency of this facility but also serves as a testament to engineering prowess during that era. This historic image from Historic England Archive provides us with a unique perspective on how infrastructure development shaped London's transportation network while showcasing architectural ingenuity and technological advancements in rail systems.
