Canvas Prints from Historic England
Bossington OP01574
Bossington, Somerset, 1890-'1910. Unknown photographer, probably Sir Henry Churchill Maxwell Lyte (1848-'1940), platinum print. Lytes view of the village of Bossington in the decades before the First World War is full of interesting topographical details. The distant hill hints at the settlementas secluded valley setting; the ancient gnarled tree and the stone and thatched cottages, one with a massive external chimney, suggest a place of great antiquity; the stone pavement and steps outside the cottage on the right warn of deep winter mud, not least in the unpaved road. The peaceful scene suggests a rural idyll, but few inhabitants probably shared that view

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Bossington OP01574" takes us back in time to the quaint village of Bossington in Somerset, between 1890 and 1910. Although the photographer remains unknown, it is believed to be Sir Henry Churchill Maxwell Lyte who captured this stunning platinum print. Lyte's keen eye for detail allows us to immerse ourselves in the topographical wonders of this picturesque village. The photograph showcases a distant hill that hints at Bossington's secluded valley location, adding an air of mystery and tranquility. The presence of an ancient gnarled tree alongside stone and thatched cottages evokes a sense of great antiquity within these humble dwellings. One cottage stands out with its massive external chimney, further emphasizing the historical significance of this place. As we observe closely, we notice a stone pavement and steps outside one cottage on the right side—a subtle reminder of the challenges faced during deep winter muds in those unpaved roads. Despite these hardships, there is an undeniable sense of peace emanating from this scene—an idyllic rural setting frozen in time. However, it is important to acknowledge that not all inhabitants shared this romanticized view. Life was undoubtedly tough for many living here during that era. Nonetheless, through Historic England's archive collection "Picturing England" we can appreciate both the beauty and complexity hidden within our nation's rural villages without commercial intentions but rather as a testament to our rich heritage.
