Carlisle Cathedral JLP01_08_075747
CARLISLE CATHEDRAL, CARLISLE, CUMBRIA. A stonemason working on the restoration of Carlisle Cathedral, chiselling a piece of stone prior to it being bonded to the existing fabric of the cathedral with SBD Certite.
This photograph is part of a batch taken by Laing to show restoration work being carried out using SBD Certite. In 1961, N M Phillips, the architect for Carlisle Cathedral started experimenting with the bonding material SBD Certite in the restoration of the cathedral. It was used on all but one of the decorated Gothic windows of the South Clerestory and by the time this photograph was taken, it was being used in the restoration of the north face of the cathedral. By using SBD Certite, Laing stonemasons were able to remove just the weathered surface of the stonework. New stone only two inches deep could be bonded to the old stone saving more of the original fabric of the building and cutting costs by a third

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in the restoration of Carlisle Cathedral, showcasing the skilled craftsmanship of a stonemason. With focused precision, the stonemason diligently chisels away at a piece of stone before it is seamlessly bonded to the existing fabric of the cathedral using SBD Certite. Dating back to 1961, N M Phillips, the architect for Carlisle Cathedral, embarked on an innovative experiment with SBD Certite as a bonding material for restoration purposes. This photograph is part of a series taken by Laing to document this groundbreaking technique. The success and efficiency of SBD Certite can be seen in its application on numerous Gothic windows and now on the north face of this medieval marvel. By utilizing SBD Certite, Laing stonemasons were able to preserve more of the original fabric while reducing costs significantly. Instead of replacing entire sections, they could delicately remove only weathered surfaces and bond new stone just two inches deep onto old stone. This method not only saved precious historical elements but also cut expenses by one-third. The image showcases both dedication and expertise as these conservation efforts ensure that future generations will continue to admire and appreciate Carlisle Cathedral's timeless beauty. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity in preserving our architectural heritage for years to come.
