COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. A group of people with cameras, probably members of the press, standing on the tower of the Ruined Cathedral Church of St Michael, during the operation to lower the 80ft bronze spire on to the roof of the new Coventry Cathedral.
The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man a joint project involving Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Coventry Cathedral during Operation Rich Man. Standing on the tower of the Ruined Cathedral Church of St Michael, a group of individuals equipped with cameras, most likely members of the press, observe intently as an 80ft bronze spire is being lowered onto the roof of the new cathedral. The operation was a collaborative effort between Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. Operation Rich Man involved a remarkable feat: using an RAF Belvedere helicopter to hoist and carefully position the massive spire onto its designated spot. However, adverse weather conditions forced a postponement in lowering the 1/2 ton cross that crowns this architectural masterpiece. The image not only showcases the dedication and precision required for such an endeavor but also highlights media involvement in documenting this historic event. These photographers play a crucial role in capturing moments that will forever be etched into history books. Taken during the 1960s, this photograph from A© Historic England Archive offers us a glimpse into both past construction techniques and media coverage practices. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration while providing valuable insight into one chapter of Coventry Cathedral's rich narrative.
