Portrait of Machtelt Suijs, c. 1540-1545. Creator: Maerten van Heemskerck (Dutch, 1498-1574)

Portrait of Machtelt Suijs, c. 1540-1545. Heemskerck lived in Rome for four years (1532-36) and was deeply affected by the citys art and antiquities. Here, the half-length, seated figure, the tense yet elegant hands, and even the grotesque classical mask reflect the impact of that experience, while the love of meticulously represented textures is traditionally associated with northern European art. Machtelt Suijs married Dirick van Teijlingen in 1535 and lived in Alkmaar (the Netherlands), where Heemskerck must have painted her. The coat-of-arms that hangs from the mask combines family emblems, indicating that her portrait must have been accompanied by one (now lost) of her husband

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Portrait of Machtelt Suijs" painted by Maerten van Heemskerck in the years 1540-1545. Heemskerck, a Dutch artist who resided in Rome for four years, was profoundly influenced by the city's art and antiquities. This influence is evident in the half-length seated figure of Machtelt Suijs, her tense yet elegant hands, and even the inclusion of a grotesque classical mask. These elements reflect Heemskerck's experience in Rome. The meticulous representation of textures seen in this portrait is characteristic of northern European art traditions. It is believed that Heemskerck painted this masterpiece while Machtelt Suijs lived with her husband Dirick van Teijlingen in Alkmaar, Netherlands. An intriguing detail within the artwork is a coat-of-arms hanging from the mask. This emblem combines family symbols, suggesting that Machtelt's portrait was likely accompanied by one depicting her husband (though now lost). The combination of these elements creates an engaging narrative within this 16th-century painting. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this oil on wood masterpiece continues to captivate viewers with its intricate details and skillful execution. Through Heritage Art/Heritage Images' print reproduction, art enthusiasts can appreciate and admire this remarkable work from Maerten van Heemskerck - a testament to his talent as well as his profound encounter with
