EDITORS COMMENTS
Near Vichy, 1866/67, by Jean Francois Millet (1814-1875) This exquisite watercolor and pen and brown iron gall ink over graphite on ivory laid paper perimeter mounted to cream Japanese paper depicts a serene and picturesque scene from the French countryside, created by the renowned French artist, Jean Francois Millet. Painted in the late 19th century, this work is a prime example of Millet's distinctive style, which was a part of the Barbizon School, a French artistic movement that focused on rural life and landscapes. The location of the painting is believed to be near Vichy, in the Allier region of Auvergne Rhone Alpes, France. Millet masterfully captures the essence of the countryside, with its lush green forests, vibrant pink and green plants, and the gentle flow of water in the foreground. The artist's use of color and contrast is exceptional, with the rich greens of the trees and foliage contrasting beautifully with the pinks and whites of the roses and other plants. Millet's skillful use of ink and watercolor techniques is evident in the intricate details of the trees, their trunks and branches expertly rendered with pen and ink, while the leaves and foliage are delicately painted in watercolor. The artist's attention to detail and his ability to capture the natural beauty of the scene make this work a true masterpiece of 19th-century art. This work is currently housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, where it is a cherished addition to their extensive collection of heritage art. The Art Institute of Chicago, located in the heart of the city, is a world-renowned art museum and art center, dedicated to the preservation and presentation of art from all cultures and time periods.
