Lecture in an art gallery, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham

Lecture in an art gallery, c1950. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a lecture taking place in an art gallery around the year 1950. The creator of this remarkable piece is Shirley Markham, a talented artist and illustrator who studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950 to 1952. During her time at Central, she had the privilege of being taught by Mervyn Peake, a renowned writer, artist, poet, and illustrator. Markham's artistic style was also influenced by other notable British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Markham's passion for art extended beyond the classroom as she embarked on journeys to Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome to sketch classical buildings. After graduating from Central School of Art, she pursued a successful career as a graphic designer where she created book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus, and programs. However promising her career may have been though, societal expectations during that era led Markham to abandon her professional aspirations when she married in 1957. Middle-class women were often expected to prioritize their roles as homemakers and mothers over pursuing their own ambitions. Despite possessing undeniable talent in illustration, Markham lacked the confidence to return to her craft. For many years following her departure from the art world, Markham's portfolio remained tucked away in the family attic until now. Today marks an important milestone as we proudly publish her work for the first time ever – offering viewers an opportunity to appreciate Shirley Markham's extraordinary talent that was once hidden away but can now be celebrated anew.
