There are the cooks, 1940

There are the cooks, 1940. From Life in the W.A.A.F. booklet on the Womens Auxiliary Air Force (WaF), in Tucks Better Little Book series. The WaF, whose members were referred to as WaFs, was the female auxiliary of the Royal Air Force during World War II, established in 1939. Its members did not serve as aircrew, but although they did not participate in active combat, they were exposed to the same dangers as any on the home front working at military installations. Among their duties were: crewing of barrage balloons, catering, meteorology, radar, aircraft maintenance, transport, communications duties including wireless telephonic and telegraphic operation. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "There are the cooks, 1940" offers a glimpse into the vital role of women during World War II. Taken from Life in the W. A. A. F. booklet on the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WaF), it showcases a group of dedicated female cooks who played an essential part in supporting military operations on the home front. In this image, we witness these remarkable women working tirelessly in a bustling kitchen, their determination evident on their faces. The WaFs were not aircrew members but worked diligently behind the scenes to ensure that RAF installations functioned smoothly. These brave individuals faced similar dangers as any other personnel involved in wartime efforts. The photograph highlights the diverse range of responsibilities undertaken by WaFs during this critical period. From crewing barrage balloons to meteorology, radar operation to aircraft maintenance, transport duties to wireless communication - these skilled women proved themselves indispensable. Their presence shattered traditional gender roles and demonstrated that women could excel in various professions previously dominated by men. This image serves as a powerful testament to their resilience and dedication amidst challenging circumstances. Captured by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd in London during 1940, this historical print provides us with a poignant reminder of the invaluable contributions made by women like these throughout World War II. It stands as a tribute to all those who served on the home front and contributed significantly to victory over adversity.
