Cliveden House, Maidenhead, Berkshire, 1894. Creator: Unknown

Cliveden House, Maidenhead, Berkshire, 1894. Cliveden was built by Charles Barry for the Duke of Sutherland in 1851. Queen Victoria, a frequent guest, was not amused in 1893 when the house was bought by William Waldorf Astor, Americas richest man. When he gave it to his son and daughter-in-law in 1906 Cliveden became the hub of a hectic social whirl where guests included everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill, and President Roosevelt to George Bernard Shaw. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Cliveden House in Maidenhead, Berkshire, taken in 1894 by an unknown creator. Built by Charles Barry for the Duke of Sutherland in 1851, this grand estate became a place of great historical significance and lavish social gatherings. Queen Victoria herself was a frequent guest at Cliveden, but her amusement turned to displeasure when it was purchased by William Waldorf Astor, America's wealthiest man at the time, in 1893. However, under Astor's ownership and later gifted to his son and daughter-in-law in 1906, Cliveden transformed into a bustling hub of high society events. The house witnessed an array of notable guests from various fields including entertainment icon Charlie Chaplin, political leader Winston Churchill, American President Roosevelt, and renowned playwright George Bernard Shaw. Its picturesque gardens provided a stunning backdrop for these extravagant affairs. This image is part of the book "Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes" published by The Werner Company of Chicago in 1894. It captures not only the architectural beauty but also represents the charm and allure that made Cliveden House such a popular tourist attraction during that era. With its rich history intertwined with British literature and culture, this monochrome photograph transports us back to the enchanting world of nineteenth-century England where elegance met opulence amidst breathtaking landscapes.
