Blackwall Tunnel, London, c1900

Blackwall Tunnel, London, c1900. This tunnel, the older Western tunnel, connects the Essex and Kent sides of the Thames. Designed by the London County Councils chief engineer Alexander Binnie (1839-1917), it opened in 1897. The latest techniques were used in its construction, including the employment of James Henry Greatheads (1844-1896) tunnelling shield. The tunnel was lined with glazed white brick and lit by electric light. It had two lanes for wheeled traffic and footpaths for pedestrians. View of one of the entrances, of the river, and of traffic inside the tunnel. From Bubbles published by Dr Barnados Homes for Children. (London, c1900)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Blackwall Tunnel in London, circa 1900. Serving as a vital link between Essex and Kent on either side of the River Thames, this older Western tunnel was a testament to engineering brilliance. Designed by Alexander Binnie, the chief engineer of the London County Council, it opened its gates to traffic in 1897. The construction of this remarkable tunnel employed cutting-edge techniques of its time. James Henry Greathead's tunnelling shield played a crucial role in ensuring its stability and success. The interior boasted two lanes for wheeled vehicles alongside footpaths for pedestrians, all illuminated by electric lighting – a marvel at that period. As we gaze upon this image, we are treated to multiple perspectives: one showcasing an entrance to the tunnel with bustling traffic passing through; another capturing a glimpse of the majestic River Thames flowing nearby; and finally, an intriguing view from inside the tunnel itself. Printed as part of Dr Barnados Homes for Children's publication "Bubbles" this oleograph provides us with a vivid snapshot into early 20th-century London transportation history. It showcases horse-drawn vehicles such as buses traversing through this architectural wonder while boats sail gracefully along the river. With meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colors brought forth by chromolithography techniques, this print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical documentation. A true treasure that encapsulates not only civil engineering achievements but also highlights how transport has evolved over time within one of England's most renowned cities – London.
