Ahmed Agha, c1906-1913, (1915). Creator: Mark Sykes
Ahmed Agha, c1906-1913, (1915). Kurdish men with rifles and bullet belts, Shirwan, (eastern Turkey). A little further on we met Ahmed Agha and fifty gunmen. The Agha was a tall, handsome old man, with a pathetic and harassed expression. He pointed sadly to the smoking ruins beyond the river, and showed us the wretched burnt-out inhabitants, collecting wood and stones with which to build fresh houses...When I saw this devastation, I began to think of the advantages of centralised government over feudal times. From " The Caliphs Last Heritage, a short history of the Turkish Empire" by Lt.-Col. Sir Mark Sykes. [Macmillan & Co, London, 1915]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a poignant moment in history, showcasing Ahmed Agha and his fifty gunmen in Shirwan, eastern Turkey. Taken by Mark Sykes during the early 20th century, the image portrays a group of Kurdish men adorned with rifles and bullet belts. Ahmed Agha himself stands tall amidst his companions, exuding both strength and weariness. Sykes describes Ahmed Agha as an old man with a sorrowful expression, pointing sadly towards the smoking ruins beyond the river. The devastation caused by conflict is evident as wretched burnt-out inhabitants can be seen collecting wood and stones to rebuild their homes. This scene prompts Sykes to reflect on the advantages of centralised government over feudal times. The photograph not only captures the physical appearance of these individuals but also hints at their complex roles within society – from rulers to sheikhs or even bandits. It serves as a reminder of the turbulent times faced by those living in this region during that era. Through this powerful visual narrative, Sykes provides us with a glimpse into an important chapter of Turkish history – one marked by violence, resilience, and contemplation about governance structures. As viewers today, we are invited to reflect upon how historical events shape our present realities while acknowledging both the strengths and shortcomings of different systems of rule.
