Traditional Japanese Woodblock snow scene

"Hiroshige Ando (1797-1858) is often considered, along with Hokusai, the greatest Japanese printmaking artist in the 19th century. He is best known for his landscape prints. His use of perspective is known to have influenced Western impressionists such as Van Gogh and Claude Monet. A woodblock print from the Edo period showing two figures walking on a bridge over the water towards a dwelling. One hatted figure carries a bundle over the shoulder, the other carries a parcel. This print forms part of my own private collection of original woodblock prints."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing snow scene captured through the traditional Japanese woodblock technique. Created by the renowned artist Hiroshige Ando, who is often hailed as one of the greatest printmaking artists of the 19th century alongside Hokusai, this piece exemplifies his mastery in landscape prints. The composition depicts two figures gracefully strolling on a bridge over tranquil waters towards a charming dwelling. One figure dons a hat and carries a bundle over their shoulder, while the other person holds onto a parcel. The delicate details and intricate lines characteristic of woodblock prints bring life to this enchanting Oriental-style artwork. Hiroshige's innovative use of perspective in his works had far-reaching influence on Western impressionists such as Van Gogh and Claude Monet. This particular woodcut print hails from the Edo period, adding historical significance to its artistic allure.
