MAN464477 Reaping Sugar Canes in the West Indies (colour litho) by Newbould, Frank (1887-1951); Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: Commisionned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd for HMSO;
Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Reaping Sugar Canes in the West Indies" by Frank Newbould showcases a vibrant scene of laborers working in the sugarcane fields. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd for HMSO, this artwork is part of Manchester Art Gallery's remarkable collection of artist-designed posters from 1926 to 1933. The Empire Marketing Board aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire across its territories. Through a powerful poster campaign, they sought to cultivate an awareness and preference for Empire-made products among Britons. Manchester Art Gallery acquired over 200 such posters during the 1930s, each featuring strong imagery that depicted people, places, and products associated with the vast empire. However, viewing these historical artworks today can be thought-provoking as they reflect uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of colonialism. The image itself portrays workers diligently reaping sugar canes against a backdrop that exudes both beauty and hardship. As we contemplate this photograph print captured by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Manchester Art Gallery, it serves as a reminder not only of our shared history but also prompts us to consider how past actions continue to shape our present world.
