5929014 A The Valley of the Shadow of Death. Caves in the Woronzoff Road behind the 21 Gun Battery, December 1854A (colour litho) by Simpson, William Crimea (1823-99) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: The Valley of the Shadow of Death. Caves in the Woronzoff Road behind the 21 Gun Battery, December 1854.
Coloured tinted lithograph by J Needham, from The Seat of War in the East - First Series after William Simpson, published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi and Company, 11 June 1855.
The so-called A Valley of the Shadow of DeathA was the Vorontsov Ravine to the rear of the British right attack, the position of which is indicated in this picture by the puffs of smoke on the horizon. The valley was given this name because of the enormous number of Russian shot and shells fired from the Malakhov which overshot their target and rolled into it. This drawing, made before the second bombardment, depicts only a fraction of the shells that came to fill the ravine by the end of the Crimean War (1854-1856).); eNational Army Museum; Scottish, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Valley of the Shadow of Death is a hauntingly powerful image captured by William Simpson during the Crimean War in December 1854. This coloured lithograph, created by J Needham and published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi and Company, depicts the caves in the Woronzoff Road behind the 21 Gun Battery. The title "The Valley of the Shadow of Death" holds deep significance as it refers to the Vorontsov Ravine situated at the rear of the British right attack. In this picture, one can observe puffs of smoke on the horizon indicating where Russian shots and shells were fired from Malakhov. These projectiles overshot their target and rolled into this ravine, earning it its ominous name. This particular drawing was made prior to a second bombardment, capturing only a fraction of the countless shells that eventually filled this ravine throughout the duration of the Crimean War (1854-1856). The sheer volume depicted here serves as a testament to both human suffering and resilience during times of conflict. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded not only of historical events but also reflect on themes such as destruction, sacrifice, and endurance. It stands as an enduring symbol for all those who have experienced or continue to endure similar valleys overshadowed by death's presence.
