Watercolour en grisaille, by Gordon Frederick Browne (1858-1932), after Harry McCormick (1874-1917). Original sketch published in A The Graphic Special Double NumberA, 2 April 1900.
On 6 January 1900 the Boers launched a determined attack on Ladysmith, capturing for a time two of its outlying southern defences, Wagon Hill and CaesarAs Camp. At CaesarAs Camp, their advance party almost succeeded in forcing the whole position along the hill-top, but were held in check by the Border Mounted Rifles. As the morning wore on, the Boers were subjected to heavy bombardment by 53rd Battery, Royal Field Artillery, but it was forced to cease firing when a storm of hail and rain blotted out its target.
Boer reinforcements advanced under cover of the storm, and a renewed attempt was made to carry the British position, but once again the Border Mounted Rifles, now reinforced with some regular troops, stood firm. As darkness fell the Boers conceded that their attempt had failed and, to avoid being cut off by flash floods caused by the storm, they withdrew, though many were shot or drowned in doing so.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

The Boer Attack on Caesars Camp - A Hot Corner with the Border Mounted Rifles
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in history, depicting "The Boer Attack on Caesars Camp" during the South African War of 1899-1902. The artist, Gordon Frederick Browne, skillfully brings to life the intense battle scene that unfolded at Caesar's Camp. In January 1900, the Boers launched a determined assault on Ladysmith, aiming to capture key defensive positions. At Caesar's Camp, their advance party nearly succeeded in overpowering the British forces stationed there. However, they were met with fierce resistance from the Border Mounted Rifles. As morning turned into afternoon, heavy bombardment by Royal Field Artillery forced a temporary halt in firing due to an unexpected storm. Seizing this opportunity, Boer reinforcements advanced under cover and made another attempt to break through British defenses. Once again, however, they were met with unwavering resolve from the Border Mounted Rifles. As darkness fell and flash floods threatened their retreat route, the defeated Boers withdrew from Caesar's Camp. Many lost their lives either through gunfire or drowning as they desperately tried to escape. This poignant artwork serves as a testament to bravery and resilience displayed by both sides during this tumultuous chapter in history. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by those involved and offers insight into one of many significant moments that shaped our world today.
