EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print showcases a stunning depiction of Saint Roch, the revered patron saint of plasterers, laundry workers, and dogs. Created around 1910 by the French School, this color lithograph is an exquisite piece from a series of patron saints representing various trades and professions. Saint Roch, who lived during the 13th or 14th century in France, is widely known for his miraculous acts during times of plague and epidemics. The illustration beautifully captures his story as he suffered from the plague himself while hiding in a forest. A loyal dog came to his aid, bringing him food from a nearby house and licking his wounds until he was cured. The artwork also holds historical significance beyond its religious context. It was created as part of promotional cards accompanying the sale of Chocolat Aiguebelle—a renowned chocolate brand established in 1869 by Trappist monks at their abbey in Aiguebelle. The factory built later became an important supplier of chocolate products until its closure in 1978. The attention to detail and exceptional quality seen in these trade cards reflect the craftsmanship associated with Chocolat Aiguebelle's brand legacy. This particular image pays homage to Saint Roch's feast day on August 16th—an occasion celebrated by those seeking protection against diseases. Overall, this print not only serves as a visual delight but also offers insights into both religious devotion and commercial history intertwined within one remarkable artwork.
