Photograph by Sergeant D M Smith, Army Film and Photographic Unit, World War Two, North West Europe, 1944.
The Projector Infantry Anti-Tank (PIAT) gave the lightly armed paratroops a weapon to use against tanks. Its drawbacks included its weight, the difficulty in cocking the weapon in a confined space and a maximum range of only 100 metres (109 yards). However, the bomb was capable of penetrating any tank armour.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a powerful moment during the Battle of Arnhem in 1944. In the image, a paratrooper armed with a PIAT (Projector Infantry Anti-Tank) weapon stands guard on a road, ready to defend against enemy tanks. The intensity of the situation is palpable as he takes cover behind a tree, surrounded by dense woodland. Taken by Sergeant D M Smith from the Army Film and Photographic Unit, this photo showcases the bravery and resourcefulness of British paratroopers during World War Two. Despite their limited firepower, these lightly armed soldiers were equipped with the PIAT to counter armored vehicles. While it had its drawbacks such as weight and range limitations, this anti-tank weapon was capable of penetrating any tank armor. Part of a collection depicting the 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem during Operation MARKET GARDEN, this image serves as a testament to their valiant efforts in an intense confrontation. It highlights both the natural features of the woodlands surrounding them and the determination etched on their faces. Preserved by Bridgeman Images in collaboration with National Army Museum London, this print offers viewers an insight into one soldier's role amidst chaos and danger. It symbolizes not only his individual courage but also represents all airborne forces who fought bravely during airborne operations like those at Arnhem.
