EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the Ghuznee Medal awarded to Sergeant Major John Wing of the 17th (The Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot in 1839. This prestigious medal was given to soldiers who bravely participated in the storming of the fortress of Ghuznee during the 1st Afghan War. The intense battle took place from July 21st to July 23rd, and this medal commemorates their heroic efforts. This particular medal holds historical significance as it was only the second campaign-specific award bestowed upon all ranks of the British Army, with the Waterloo Medal being the first. Commissioned by Shah Shuja, who sought to replace Dost Mohammed on Afghanistan's throne, this medal serves as a symbol of recognition for those who aided him in achieving his goal. Crafted from metal and dating back to 1839, this stunning artifact is now housed at London's National Army Museum. It stands as a testament not only to Sergeant Major John Wing's bravery but also to all soldiers who fought alongside him during that tumultuous period. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the valor displayed by these men as they faced formidable fortifications and engaged in fierce confrontations. Their unwavering dedication and sacrifice continue to inspire us today.
