EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print depicts the battle-plan of Don Juan of Austria, the illegitimate son of Charles V, in the pivotal naval battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. The Ottoman Empire, led by Admiral Ali Pasha, had amassed a formidable fleet of over 200 ships, intending to invade Europe and expand its territories. Don Juan, commanding a combined Christian fleet of around 208 galleys, aimed to intercept and defeat the Ottoman forces before they could reach their target. The intricately detailed map illustrates the strategic positions of both fleets before the battle commenced. The Ottoman fleet is shown anchored in the left half of the image, with Don Juan's Christian forces arrayed on the right. The narrow straits of Lepanto, where the battle took place, are clearly visible in the center. The plan outlines the tactical maneuvers that Don Juan intended to employ. His fleet was divided into three wings, each under the command of a capable admiral. The central wing, led by Don Juan himself, was to engage the Ottoman center, while the left and right wings, under the command of Marcantonio Colonna and Gianandrea Doria, respectively, were to attack the Ottoman flanks. The Battle of Lepanto, also known as the Battle of the Gulf of Patras, was a decisive victory for the Christian forces. The Ottoman fleet suffered heavy losses, with an estimated 30,000 men killed or captured. The victory marked a significant turning point in the history of the Mediterranean, halting the Ottoman advance into Europe and preserving the balance of power in the region. This print serves as a testament to the strategic brilliance of Don Juan and the combined efforts of the Christian forces, which ultimately led to their victory against the mighty Ottoman fleet.
