EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print commemorates a pivotal moment in the Anglo-Spanish War, specifically the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797. The image captures the decisive victory of British Admiral John Jervis (1735-1823) over a formidable Spanish squadron, securing the Atlantic approaches to the British Isles and marking a significant turning point in the Revolutionary Wars. Admiral Jervis, a seasoned naval commander, had been given the task of intercepting the Spanish fleet under the command of Vice Admiral Don José de Cordova y Córdoba, who was on a mission to reinforce the French forces in the Caribbean. With his fleet of 28 ships, Jervis lay in wait off the coast of Cape St Vincent in Portugal, anticipating the Spanish arrival. The Battle of Cape St Vincent began on the morning of 14 February when the Spanish fleet was sighted. A fierce engagement ensued, with both sides exchanging heavy fire. However, Jervis' tactics proved effective, and the British fleet managed to outmaneuver and outgun the Spanish. By the end of the day, the Spanish had lost five ships and suffered significant damage to their remaining vessels, while the British had only one ship slightly damaged. This print, produced shortly after the battle, captures the triumphant mood in Britain as news of the victory spread. It shows Admiral Jervis standing on the quarterdeck of his flagship, HMS Victory, with a triumphant expression on his face, while the Spanish fleet is depicted in disarray in the background. The print serves as a testament to Jervis' skill and determination, and to the importance of the Battle of Cape St Vincent in the broader context of the Revolutionary Wars.
