EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts the Williams Meeting House, also known as the Abbott House, located in Providence, Rhode Island, in the year 1636. The Williams Meeting House holds significant historical importance as it is considered the first permanent house of worship in Rhode Island and the birthplace of the Separatist movement in America. Roger Williams, a religious dissident and founder of the colony of Rhode Island, played a pivotal role in the establishment of this meeting house. Williams, a follower of the Separatist faith, sought religious freedom and the separation of church and state, beliefs that were not shared by the Puritan authorities in Massachusetts. In 1636, he and his followers, including the prominent family of John and Marion (Abbott) Perry, built this meeting house on land that Williams had purchased from the Native American Narragansett tribe. The Williams Meeting House served as a place of worship for the Separatist community, where they could freely practice their faith without interference from the Puritan authorities. The building's simple yet sturdy design reflects the practicality and resourcefulness of the early settlers. The thatched roof, wooden walls, and large central chimney were common features of early colonial architecture. This photograph captures the essence of the past, transporting us back to a time when religious freedom was a revolutionary concept. The Williams Meeting House stands as a testament to the courage and determination of Roger Williams and his followers, who dared to challenge the religious and political norms of their time and paved the way for religious tolerance in America.
