EDITORS COMMENTS
In the early days of August 1914, the tranquility of the Belgian town of Tirlemont was shattered as the first waves of the Great War began to engulf Europe. In this evocative photograph, Belgian artillery units prepare to leave Tirlemont, their destination the city of Louvain (Leuven) to the north. The men and horses of the army are seen here making their way down a bustling street, the wheels of their guns clattering against the cobblestones as they pass by. The air is thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder and the sound of hooves pounding against the pavement. The buildings along the street are a hive of activity, with civilians and soldiers alike hurrying to get out of the way of the advancing troops. In the background, a plume of smoke rises from the horizon, a reminder of the battles that were already raging just beyond the town's borders. The soldiers, many of them young and nervous, are focused on their mission, their faces set with determination and resolve. This image captures the sense of urgency and chaos that marked the early days of the First World War, as Belgian forces raced to defend their homeland against the invading German army. The scene is one of both departure and arrival, as the soldiers leave Tirlemont and head towards the unknown, while the town itself is left behind, its future uncertain in the face of the unfolding conflict.
