EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the pivotal moment of the Battle of Fornovo, which took place on July 6, 1495, in Italy. The scene depicts Francisco de Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua and commander of the Venetian and Mantuan forces, leading his troops against a much smaller French and Swiss army. Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Swiss and French forces, renowned for their military prowess, successfully repelled the larger Italian army. The Battle of Fornovo was a significant event in the Italian Wars, a series of conflicts that lasted from 1494 to 1559. The war was sparked by the invasion of Italy by Charles VIII of France, who sought to expand his territorial holdings in the region. The Italian city-states, including Venice and the Papal States, formed alliances to resist the French invasion. In the Battle of Fornovo, Gonzaga led an army of approximately 12,000 men against a Swiss and French force of around 3,000. The Italian army was initially successful, but the Swiss and French forces, led by their renowned condottieri, including Hans Trudpert and Philibert de Croÿ, managed to turn the tide of the battle. The Italian forces were eventually forced to retreat, marking a significant victory for the Swiss and French. This print, with its dramatic composition and intricate detail, offers a glimpse into the intensity and complexity of the Battle of Fornovo. The clash of arms and the determined expressions of the soldiers convey the raw energy and courage of the battlefield. The print also serves as a reminder of the strategic importance of military leadership and the role of alliances in shaping the political landscape of Europe during this period.
