EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the charming Bathampton Station in Somerset, circa 1960. The image beautifully captures the essence of this historic railway station, showcasing its platforms and bridges that once welcomed countless travelers. Opened in February 1857 off Mill Lane, Bathampton Station served as a vital transportation hub for both locals and visitors alike. However, as time went on, progress demanded changes to be made at the junction. Sadly, in October 1966, the station was closed down and most of its remarkable features were demolished. Looking at this photograph today evokes a sense of nostalgia for an era long gone. The simplicity and elegance of the architecture are truly timeless. One cannot help but imagine bustling crowds eagerly awaiting their trains or bidding farewell to loved ones. The footbridge depicted in this print adds another layer of charm to the scene. It stands tall as a symbol of connection between different parts of the station and serves as a reminder that railways have always been about bringing people together. As we gaze upon this snapshot from history preserved by STEAM Museum of GWR (Great Western Railway), we are transported back to an era when train travel was not only practical but also romanticized – where stations like Bathampton played an integral role in connecting communities across Somerset and beyond.
