EDITORS COMMENTS
Asoka the Great: A Devoted Monarch and Champion of Peace (238-265 AD, India) This evocative image depicts Asoka, the renowned Mauryan Emperor of ancient India, known for his unwavering commitment to Buddhism and the dissemination of his edicts throughout his vast empire. Born Siddhartha Gautama in 273 BC, Asoka ascended the throne in 269 BC following the death of his father, Bindusara. However, it was only after the bloody Battle of Kalinga in 261 BC, which left an estimated 100,000 people dead, that Asoka underwent a profound transformation. Moved by the carnage and the suffering it inflicted, Asoka renounced violence and embraced Buddhism wholeheartedly. He became a devout follower, dedicating himself to the spread of the Dharma, or the Buddhist teachings. Asoka's edicts, inscribed on pillars, rocks, and cave walls, were a testament to his newfound faith and his desire for peace and harmony. The inscriptions, written in various languages and scripts, were distributed across the length and breadth of his empire, from Afghanistan to Bangladesh. They served as a moral guide for his subjects, promoting the virtues of non-violence, truthfulness, and compassion. The edicts also contained instructions for the welfare of animals, the protection of forests, and the promotion of social harmony. Asoka's legacy as a champion of peace and a devoted Buddhist monarch endured long after his death in 238 AD. His edicts continue to inspire and influence various aspects of Indian culture and society, making him an enduring symbol of enlightened rulership and the power of compassion.
