Toyokuni Utagawa Collection

Toyokuni Utagawa (1769-1825) was a Japanese artist and printmaker of the ukiyo-e genre. He was born in Edo, Japan and is best known for his woodblock prints depicting kabuki actors. He was the first to use the name Utagawa, which became a popular art form in Japan during the Edo period. Toyokuni's work is considered to be some of the most influential in Japanese art history. His works often featured detailed facial expressions and body language, as well as intricate backgrounds that showed off his skill with composition and design. Toyokuni's influence can still be seen today in modern manga and anime, as well as traditional ukiyo-e prints. He is remembered for his innovative style that helped shape an entire era of Japanese art history.
