James Jacques Joseph Tissot (1836-1902) was a French painter and illustrator. He was born in Nantes, France, and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His early works were mostly portraits of fashionable women and genre scenes of everyday life. In 1871 he moved to London where he became a successful society painter, producing many paintings of high society figures such as Lady Agnew of Lochnaw (1892). He also produced illustrations for books such as The Bible and Shakespeare's plays. In later years he returned to France where he painted religious subjects including The Meeting on the Turret Stairs (1881).
