Peter Scheemakers Collection

Peter Scheemakers (1691-1781) was a Flemish sculptor who worked in England and Italy. He is best known for his sculptures of the Duke of Marlborough, Sir Isaac Newton, and other prominent figures. He was born in Antwerp and studied under his father before moving to London in 1711. In London he worked as an assistant to John Michael Rysbrack before setting up his own studio in 1720. His work was highly sought after by the aristocracy and he became one of the most successful sculptors of his time. He also created monuments for Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, Hampton Court Palace, and many other churches across England. His style combined elements from both Baroque and Neoclassical sculpture which gave it a unique look that set him apart from other artists at the time.
